The immediate past national chairman of the Nigerian Bar Association, NBA, Olumide Akpata has emerged the governorship candidate of the Labor Party, LP, for the September governorship election in Edo State.
Akpata, who was a senior partner and the Head of the Corporate and Commercial Practice Group at Templars law firm in Nigeria until his resignation on 31 August 2023, won the primary election held in Benin City, the state capital, pulling a total number of 316 votes.
The Deputy Governor of Abia, Ikechukwu Emetu who was the Chief Returning Officer for the party, declared Akpata winner of the primary having scored the highest number of votes.

Emetu said Akpata, “having scored 316 votes and satisfied the provisions of the party, by the power vested on me as the chief returning officer of the party, I hereby declare Olumide Akpata as winner of the party’s gubernatorial primary election of Edo state.”
Olumide, in his acceptance speech, appreciated the party and his supporters and expressed preparedness to achieve the new task ahead of him, while carrying everybody along.
Credible News reports that there was jubilation at the venue immediately Akpata was declared as the winner of the primary.
Olumide Apata, a native of Edo state is a Nigerian legal practitioner and politician. He was a senior partner and the Head of the Corporate and Commercial Practice Group at Templars law firm in Nigeria until his resignation on 31 August 2023 to enable him to pursue partisan politics.
