Abia Warriors displayed resilience on Monday as they secured a 1-0 victory against Kano Pillars at home in the ongoing Nigeria Professional Football League, NPFL, match.

In the NPFL Week 23 fixture at the Sani Abacha stadium, a massive crowd witnessed the intense match. Abia midfielder, Daniel Ijeh, scored in the 79th minute with a remarkable long-range shot. Following the goal, Kano Pillars aggressively pursued an equalizer but missed several opportunities. Despite the home side’s efforts to level the score, the visitors maintained their defensive stance until the end of the match, securing their victory.

After the match, Abia Warriors coach, Bethel Orji, praised his players for their performance against a formidable opponent like Kano Pillars. He acknowledged the challenges posed by Pillars and commended his team’s fighting spirit throughout the game.

Between 2005 and 2010, the club played under the name “Orji Uzor Kalu FC” as a tribute to Abia governor Orji Uzor Kalu, who provided state sponsorship to the team when they ascended to the professional level. However, they returned to their original name in the summer of 2010. Their significant achievement came in August 2013 when they clinched promotion to the Nigeria Premier League for the first time after securing victory in their division on the final day of the season.

On the other hand, coach Abdu Maikaba expressed dissatisfaction with the officiating, attributing the loss to what he perceived as poor decisions by the center referee. He specifically highlighted a corner kick awarded to Abia Warriors, which ultimately resulted in the decisive goal.

Despite the defeat, coach Abdu Maikaba praised his team for their efforts and expressed his intention to address the areas where they fell short during the game.

Meanwhile, Daniel Ijeh, the goal scorer for Abia Warriors, was recognized for his outstanding performance and was named the Man-of-the-Match by the Sports Writers Association of Nigeria, SWAN, Kano Chapter.
