The Association of Resident Doctors, ARD,at the University College Hospital, UCH, Ibadan, has begun a three-day strike following a suspected assault on one of their members by relatives of a patient at the hospital.

The statement by Dr. John Oladapo, President of UCH ARD, highlights the doctors’ demands following the assault on one of their members. They are seeking a public apology from those responsible for the assault and are calling for improvements in the hospital’s security measures to prevent similar incidents in the future.

Dr. Oladapo explained that the assault occurred while the doctor was attending to a known Sickle Cell patient experiencing a painful crisis in the Emergency Department. The assailants confronted the doctor in the consulting room and subjected him to a violent attack.

Dr. John Oladapo’s statement further reveals the severity of the assault on the doctor attending to the sickle cell patient. He mentioned that the mother of the patient, who attempted to intervene, was also subjected to physical violence during the incident. Despite the doctor’s efforts to escape, he was pursued and assaulted by the assailants.

The security personnel at the hospital eventually intervened and rescued the doctor, but not before he sustained injuries to both his physical well-being and mental health, as well as damage to his self-esteem.
