Abdullahi Surajo, also known as Bolo, a 14-year-old boy detained at Kurmawa Correctional Centre in Kano, has appealed to the state Governor, Abba Yusuf, to intervene and secure his release.

The state Commissioner of Police, Mr. Muhammad Hussaini Gumel, led the Solicitors Scheme Advisory Committee, established by the Inspector General of Police, Mr. Kayode Egbetokun, on a visit to the center.

During the visit, the team discovered over 300 awaiting trial inmates in the custodial center, without proper documentation of their cases.

However, a teenager, speaking to journalists who accompanied the team, appealed, saying, “Please help me tell Gov. Abba Yusuf to assist me out of this situation as I’ve been denied fair hearing and the right of access to justice.”

Bolo revealed that he was detained for allegedly forcefully taking a lady’s phone at Naibawa Quarters with others who are still at large.

He expressed his critical condition, feeling like he’s slowly dying, and believes that only Governor Yusuf’s timely intervention can save his life. Bolo desires a second chance to sincerely repent to Allah, apologize to his victims, and turn over a new leaf to make positive contributions to society.

Being the youngest in the facility and having spent over a year there, Bolo lamented the absence of legal representation at court, which leads to authorities rarely taking him to court again. He highlighted the lack of reformatory measures in the facility, where senior boys dominate and daily life resembles hell.

Bolo shared the grim conditions he faces: wearing the same clothes since his arrival, poor personal hygiene due to neglect, and the harsh reality of life behind bars. He acknowledged the consequences of his early involvement in crime, admitting that he cheated himself.

Life in the facility, according to Bolo, is far from pleasant and resembles hellish conditions.
