The Yobe State government has signed a five-year memorandum of understanding worth $2bn with Trans-Sahara Consortium to boost livestock development across its major cattle markets through the application of biotechnologies.

Governor Mai Mala Buni, represented by the Secretary to the State Government, Baba Malam-Wali at the signing of the Memorandum of Understanding between the state government and the company, on Wednesday in Damaturu, said the initiative would revolutionize the cattle production and trading in the state, explaining that cattle rearing has been a major part of the culture and tradition of indigines of the state.

“Livestock rearing is one of the major occupations of Yobe State with one of the largest cattle markets in West Africa, however, the business remains largely untapped due to low investment in the entire livestock value chain,” he said.

To harness the indigenous breeds of livestock for better production and improvement, Mallam-Wali said the state government would partner Trans-Sahara Consortium.

“Integration of biotechnology into our cattle production practices will enable us to enhance the quality, health and productivity of the livestock.

“Through innovative genetic and reproductive technologies, we can elevate the standard of our cattle breeds, ensuring resilience, disease resistance and improved breeding outcomes,” he said.

He expressed optimism that the partnership would not only strengthen the foundation of cattle industry but also stimulate broader economic development and food security in the state.

While commending partners and stakeholders for their contributions to the realization of the agreement, Baba reiterated commitment towards advancing agricultural innovation, economic prosperity, and food security.

The partnership is also meant to produce and export beef and milk of exotic cattle breeds.

The development comes on the heels of the establishment of the Nazari grazing reserve in the state.
