Chuks Akuneto, the U-19 coach of Oldham FC, has expressed his desire to become the head coach of Nigeria’s U-17 national team, the Golden Eaglets.

Oldham FC currently competes in the National League, which is the fifth tier of the English football league system.

“I am confident that I can revitalize youth football in Nigeria and contribute to the development of our national teams. I am ready to bring my wealth of experience from my time at the English club to the Golden Eaglets and help nurture young talents into future stars for the country.

“I have a proven track record of developing youth players into top-level professionals, and I am eager to replicate that success in Nigeria,” Akuneto said in the WhatsApp message to NAN.

In his statement, Akuneto emphasized his commitment to youth development in Nigerian football. He highlighted his intention to bring his experience from his time at the English club to enhance the development of young players in Nigeria. He expressed his interest in managing the national U-17 team and stressed the importance of a strategic approach to youth development, beyond just winning matches. Akuneto believes that Nigeria has abundant talent, but there needs to be a focus on ensuring the smooth progression of players from youth teams to the senior side. He emphasized the significance of prioritizing player development, starting from the Golden Eaglets level.

He emphasized his readiness to transform youth football in the country and is prepared to begin working immediately if selected. Akuneto’s extensive 15-year playing career across five countries, coupled with his successful coaching career, including roles with Stockport County’s U-18s and FC United of Manchester’s Youth Team Manager and first-team Coach, demonstrate his wealth of experience and suitability for the role.
