The National Emergency Management Agency, NEMA, has narrated how its personnel struggled to quench a fire outbreak on Wednesday morning in Idumota, Lagos State.

Goods worth millions of naira were said to have been destroyed in a fire outbreak that consumed a four-storey building in Dosumu Market, Idumota, Lagos Island.

The fire affected three buildings, including two two-storey structures and one three-storey building in the market known for the sales of clothes, bags, and shoes.

The Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service and other emergency service providers, who confirmed the incident in a statement on X, said firefighters are already at the scene to salvage the situation.

“The fire stations at Ebute Elefun, Ilupeju, and Alausa have deployed resources to mitigate the situation effectively as firefighting operations are ongoing.

“The cause of the fire is yet to be determined and casualties are yet to be ascertained,” the post read.

It added that investigation was ongoing to determine the cause of the fire outbreak.

Giving an update on the incident, NEMA Zonal coordinator, South-West, Ibrahim Farinloye said the team suffered a serious challenge of supply of water.

“Fire trucks go as far as Guinness to source for water. Three pieces of four-storey buildings and one of five-storey building are engulfed in fire.

“One of the buildings had collapsed under the intensity of the fire,” he said.

Farinloye added neither injury nor casualty was recorded from the fire incident.
