The Super Eagles had their inaugural training session in Marrakech, Morocco, the designated venue for their two friendly matches against Ghana and Mali, scheduled for Friday and Tuesday respectively.

The Nigerian national football team, the Super Eagles, are reuniting for the first time since the 2023 African Cup of Nations, where they lost 2-1 to the hosts, Cote d’Ivoire, in the final last month. Finidi George has been appointed as the interim manager for two friendly games while the search for a permanent coach continues.

Twelve Super Eagles players arrived early at the camp in Marrakesh, Morocco, including Stanley Nwabali, Calvin Bassey, and Alex Iwobi. Others, like Chigozie Awaziem and Frank Onyeka, arrived just before the evening training session.

Under the guidance of interim coach Finidi George, the team began training to get back in shape after their travels. George expressed satisfaction with the players’ response to the training session, although they are still waiting for some players to join.

“The players who are here have been doing well in training, although it wasn’t too intense because some of them just arrived. There’s a good atmosphere and team spirit, which I’m happy about,” said interim coach Finidi George. Regarding the opportunity to manage the team for the two friendlies against Ghana and Mali, George emphasized the importance of staying calm and doing the job properly because many Nigerians are watching.

“We want to make them proud, and we know these matches are crucial for Nigeria, so we will take them seriously,” he added.

The Eagles will face Ghana on Friday and Mali on Tuesday at the Grand Stade de Marrakech. Nigeria is gearing up for the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers against South Africa in June. Currently, they are third in the group with two points, behind Rwanda and South Africa.
