Nigeria’s long jump star, Ese Brume, clinched the gold medal in the women’s long jump at the ongoing African Games in Ghana.
Brume achieved a remarkable leap of 6.92 meters on her first attempt, securing her second consecutive African Games gold medal. This victory follows her previous triumph at the last edition in Rabat, Morocco, in 2019. Nigeria’s Prestina Ochonogor made her international debut and clinched a bronze medal in the long jump event with a jump of 6.62 meters. Meanwhile, Koala Jasmine from Burkina Faso secured the silver medal.
In other competitions, Nigeria dominated the discus throw final, with Obiageri Amaechi and Chioma Onyekwere winning the gold and silver medals, respectively. Onyekwere, the defending champion and African record holder, settled for second place with a throw of 58.03 meters, while Nora Monie of Cameroon secured the bronze. Additionally, Jemi Francis-Peterson earned a silver medal in the women’s heptathlon, accumulating 5268 points across seven events. She finished behind Ahouanwanou Odile of Benin Republic.

Team Nigeria currently holds the second position on the medals table, trailing behind Egypt. The ongoing Games, which commenced on March 8, are scheduled to conclude on Saturday in Accra. The African Games, formerly known as the All-Africa Games, is a continental multi-sport event held every four years. It brings together athletes from across Africa to compete in various sports disciplines. The inaugural edition of the Games took place in 1965 in Brazzaville, Republic of the Congo. Since then, the event has grown in stature and popularity, showcasing the talent and diversity of African athletes.
