Four Nigerian wrestlers have secured spots in the Paris 2024 Olympics after competing in the ongoing African championships and Olympics qualifiers in Alexandria, Egypt.
Blessing Oburududu, a silver medalist at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics, earned her place with a 2-0 pinfall victory over Uilau Tarkong of Palau in the 68kg category. They join Odunayo Adekuoroye, who qualified in 2023 after winning a bronze medal in the women’s 57kg category at the World Championships in Belgrade.
Tokyo 2020 Olympics silver medalist Blessing Oburududu secured her spot at the 2024 Paris Olympics with a convincing 2-0 pinfall victory over Uilau Tarkong of Palau in the 68kg category. Likewise, World Military Champion Hannah Reuben earned her ticket to Paris with a dominant 6-0 victory over Amy Youin of Cote D’Ivoire in the 76kg category. Esther Kolawole also joined the Nigerian contingent heading to Paris after defeating Angelina Rodrigues of Cape Verde with a commanding 10-0 score. African Games champion Christiana Ogunsanya showcased her prowess by overpowering Egyptian Shaimaa Mohamed with a resounding 10-0 victory in the 53kg category, securing her qualification for the Olympics.

However, Mercy Genesis narrowly missed out on a spot in the Paris Olympics after a closely contested 5-7 defeat to Nada Mohamed of Egypt in the 50kg weight class. Despite this setback, Nigeria will still be well-represented with five female wrestlers set to compete at the Paris 2024 Olympics.
Credible News reports that Nigerian male freestyle wrestlers are gearing up to compete on Sunday, the final day of this window’s qualifiers. They will aim to secure their spots for the Paris Olympics alongside their female counterparts. The remaining Olympic slots will be determined from May 9 to 12 at the 2024 World Qualification Tournament in Istanbul, Turkey. This tournament will be crucial for wrestlers seeking last-chance qualification for the Olympics.
