The death toll from the biggest earthquake off the coast of Taiwan has now climbed to seven according to the Central Emergency Operation Centre, CEOC, on Wednesday.

The 7.2-magnitude earthquake, with its epicentre located approximately 25 kilometres southeast of Hualien in eastern Taiwan, resulted in numerous landslides in the rugged east coast area of the island.

CEOC reports indicate that the seven fatalities occurred in a tunnel on the Dekalun Trail in a mining area within Hualien County.

The CEOC reported that 736 people were injured, and 77 people were still trapped in tunnels.

In Taroko National Park’s Chongde Tunnel, a group of people, including two Germans, became trapped.

In addition, approximately 60 people were trapped in the Jinwen Tunnel on the highway connecting the eastern cities of Suao and Hualien.
