Students have been forced to flee Plateau State University in the Bokkos Local Government as assailants suspected to be herdsmen launched an attack on the institution.

Videos footages circulating the social media platform X,  shows students fleeing the premises even as they try to get a hiding place.

An X user wrote: “Plateau State University is under serious attack and students are running for their lives. Please call your loved ones there and if you can help evacuate students please help.

“It is pandemonium everyone is scampering to safely because rattling gunshots are all over the university,” a fleeing student said.

Another user said: ” my school is currently under attack by Fulani….. please we need the intervention of the government….. it is happening now as we speak… please make this viral…we need help.”

Meanwhile, the Police Public Relations Officer in the state, DSP Alabo Alfred in a post was quoted as saying that personnel had been deployed to the school.

Rate of casualty is yet to be ascertained at the time of filing this report.

Students of the Plateau State University, Bokkos, had earlier on Friday staged a protest following an attack by bandits that led to the death of one of their colleagues.

The aggrieved students who bemoaned the incessant attack by bandits on the community condemned the attack by terrorists on their school premises on Thursday, April 18, 2024.

They alleged that students of the institution have become victims of kidnapping, murder, and rape by bandits.

In a viral video, the students could be seen carrying the corpse of James Alesah Longworth Dading, a student of the institution who was allegedly killed as bandits raided the institution.

They aggrieved students, blocked the major road leading to the institution, and sang solidarity songs as they cried out to the governor of the state, Caleb Mutfwang, and the federal government to come to their aid.

Meanwhile, the University authority has issued a statement condemning the attack which resulted the the tragic loss of the student.

Registrar of the institution, Yakubu Ayuba, in the statement underscores the profound loss felt by the University community, while reaffirming the commitment to ensuring the security and welfare of all members.

The statement disclosed that despite ongoing efforts by the Plateau State government, security agencies, University management, and stakeholders to improve security, the enemies of the University and the state orchestrated this dastardly attack, resulting in the loss of a cherished student.

“In response to the heartbreaking news, the Vice-Chancellor and the entire university management expressed their deepest condolences to the family of the deceased, the student body, and the university community”.

“To honor the memory of the fallen student, management declared a two-day mourning period on Friday 19th and Saturday 20th April, 2024, as a result, all examinations scheduled for these days have been suspended,” it read.
