This May promises an exhilarating experience for movie enthusiasts, with a fantastic lineup of films ready to captivate audiences.

Let’s delve into the five of the most anticipated movies that will grace cinemas and streaming platforms in the month.

1. ỤNO

In a much-awaited follow-up to his debut film, Nigerian filmmaker Ebuka Njoku is poised to release his next feature, ỤNỌ (The F in the Family), a compelling mix of family drama and romantic comedy that delves into the life of a modern Nigerian family.

Set in the picturesque city of Enugu, the film’s narrative unfolds over a day, chronicling the attempts of Junior (played by Keezyto) to reunite his fiancée with his estranged family, only to face unexpected familial tensions.

The cast includes acclaimed actors Nkem Owoh and Jennifer Eliogu, alongside rising stars such as Sophia Chisom and Abayomi Alvin.

The film, which promises a reflection on family bonds and cultural identity, will premiere in cinemas on May 17.

2. Funmilayo Ransome Kuti

Directed by Bolanle Austen Peters, this biographical drama brings to the screen the stirring story of Funmilayo Ransome-Kuti, a pioneer of women’s rights in Nigeria and mother to legendary musician Fela Kuti.

The film explores her courageous fight against colonial and patriarchal constraints, from her early days as the first female student at Abeokuta Grammar School to her impactful role in the Abeokuta Women’s Union.

The film, which will be released on May 17, features a stellar ensemble, including Joke Silva and Kehinde Bankole. It provides a poignant look at one of Nigeria’s most influential figures.

3. Criminal

Helmed by newcomer Dolapo Adigun under the mentorship of Niyi Akinmolayan, Criminal is a gritty crime thriller from Anthill Studios. The story centres on the desperate act of a man taking a hospital hostage to save his brother, highlighting a tense race against time.

The film is Adigun’s directorial debut and showcases a cast led by Funlola Aofiyebi and Uzor Arukwe.

Set for a nationwide release on May 31, the film promises to keep audiences on the edge of their seats with its intense narrative and raw emotional depth.

4. Aburo

Directed by Yemi Filmboy Morafa and produced by Stephen Oluboyo, Aburo is a narrative of survival and ambition set against the backdrop of street life. The film follows the life of a young street thief whose agility and quick reflexes catch the attention of a washed-up athlete, sparking a journey toward athletic stardom.

Efa Iwara and Toni Tones headline the cast in this tale of resilience and redemption, which will be released in cinemas on May 1.

5. Water and Garri

Marking Afrobeats star Tiwa Savage’s acting debut, Water and Garri, is a drama about self-discovery and reconciliation directed by Meji Alabi. The film follows Aisha, a fashion designer who returns to her homeland in Cape Coast, Ghana, after a decade abroad. Amid escalating violence and old flames, Aisha must confront her past and present to find peace and purpose.

The film is an evocative exploration of identity and homecoming, premiering on Prime Video on May 10.
