A Spanish-Brazilian national named Marcus Aurelio Monzo was remanded in custody on Thursday by a London magistrates’ Court following a sword attack in the city which killed 14-year-old Daniel Anjorin.

Monzo who resides in Newham, east London has been charged with a series of offences, which include two counts of attempted murder, two counts of grievous bodily harm, aggravated burglary, and possession of a bladed article, the police announced on Wednesday.

Four people were injured, including two Metropolitan Police officers.

Monzo, aged 36, made an appearance at Westminster Magistrates’ Court and was subsequently remanded in custody this morning.

The defendant was ordered to remain in custody until his appearance at the Old Bailey, scheduled for Tuesday unless a hearing can be arranged on Friday.

Daniel Anjorin was a pupil at Bancroft’s private school in Woodford Green, which is also the same school attended by Nottingham knife-attack victim Grace O’Malley-Kumar.

“Daniel was a wonderful child, well-loved, and hard-working. His passing leaves a gaping wound in our family.

“No family should have to go through what we are experiencing.

“Any family will understand it’s an absolute tragedy,” the deceased family said.

Meanwhile the Federal Government has expressed condolences to the family of the deceased who tragically his life in the sword attack on Tuesday.

The Chairman of the Nigerians in Diaspora Commission, NiDCOM, Abike Dabiri-Erewa, on Thursday, described the incident as “unfortunate, sad, and gruesome.”

Dabiri-Erewa, in a statement signed by the spokesperson of NiDCOM, Abdur-Rahman Balogun, condoled with the family of the deceased and the Nigerian communities in the UK, while “praying unto God to rest the soul of young Daniel whose life was cut short on Tuesday.”

She maintained optimism that decisive actions would be taken to ensure that the culprit, who is already in police custody, receives appropriate punishment, the statement added.
