The Nigerian Communications Commission, NCC, has debunked reports that it approved fresh telecoms tariff plans for the Mobile Network Operators, MNOs, for any increments in product and service costs for telecoms consumers.

The telecoms sector regulatory Commission made the clarification on Saturday in response to the misinformation circulating the media that the Commission  introduced new tariff plans and pricing rules for the telecoms industry.

The misinformation was reportedly linked to a document titled: “Guidance on the Simplification of Tariffs in the Nigerian Communications Sector,” which the NCC recently posted on its corporate website.

The online news report had said: “The Nigerian Communications Commission has approved tariff increases for MTN, Airtel, Glo, and other telecom companies.

“The new increase affects voice, SMS, data, and other services across the telecom industry. The new increase will see Nigerians pay more for telecom services.”

However, Dr. Aminu Maida, Executive Vice-Chairman/Chief Executive Officer on his verified X account noted that: “Like the others, this is FAKE NEWS!

“The Commission has neither approved any Telecom Tariff plans nor hike as this report claims.”

The telecoms regulator further noted: “The NCC has neither approved any new Telecom Tariff Plans nor hike as reported on online. The public is advised to please disregard.

“NCC issued a directive for all operators to simplify their current tariff plans in a transparent and fair manner for consumers.”

Meanwhile, the NCC has since flagged the aforementioned post on its X page as fake news, while restating that there are no such tariff plans or pricing updates have been approved.

Likewise, network operators have debunked claims of a tariff increase approval by the Commission.

Engr. Gbenga Adebayo, Chairman of the Association of Licensed Telecom Operators in Nigeria, in a text message also affirmed that “Telcos have not been granted any approval for tariff review,” The Punch report said.

Also, calls and text messages to other lines have indicated that product and service rates are still the same, report stated.
