The Federal Government has issued a travel alert to its citizens in the United Kingdom, UK, due to heightened violence and disorder following recent riots.

The travel alert was signed by the spokesperson for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Eche Abu-Ode, on Monday.

Violent protests erupted in towns and cities in Britain after three girls were killed and 10 people were injured in a knife attack at a children’s dance class in Southport, in northwest England, last Monday.

The girls’ deaths were seized on by anti-immigrant and anti-Muslim groups as misinformation spread that the suspected attacker was an immigrant and a radical Islamist. Police have said the suspect was born in Britain and are not treating it as a terrorist incident.

Following the development, the government advised citizens to avoid political processions, protests, rallies, and marches. They should also steer clear of crowded areas and large gatherings and remain vigilant and self-aware at all times.

The statement read in part: “There is an increased risk of violence and disorder occasioned by the recent riots in the UK, stemming from the killing of three young girls at a concert.

“The violence has assumed dangerous proportions as evidenced by reported attacks on Law enforcement agents and damage to infrastructure.

“To this end, citizens are advised to be extra vigilant and take measures as follows: Avoid political processions and protests, rallies or marches. Avoid crowded areas and large gatherings. Be vigilant and self-aware at all times.”

The ministry encouraged citizens to contact the Nigerian High Commission in the UK for relevant information via email (hc@nigeriahc.org.uk) or phone (+442078391244).
