The Adamawa Government has issued an urgent advisory for residents in flood-prone areas to move to higher ground to avoid the severe impacts of flooding, which could lead to significant loss of life and property.

Dr. Celine Laori, Executive Secretary of the Adamawa State Emergency Management Agency, ADSEMA, emphasized the gravity of the recent flooding that has hit Madagali, Demsa, and Numan Local Government Areas. Dr. Laori described the flooding as catastrophic, underscoring the lessons it has imparted to those in vulnerable areas.

The floods have affected 21 communities across these three areas, resulting in six deaths and displacing over 12,961 individuals. The disaster has severely impacted local infrastructure, including bridges, homes, shops, healthcare facilities, schools, and farmlands.

In Madagali, over 10,264 people have been affected, with many now seeking refuge in nine temporary shelters. In Numan, about 1,113 people have been impacted, with 206 displaced and residing in two camps. Demsa has seen 1,584 people affected across five communities.

In response to the crisis, the government has distributed essential relief items to the victims, including food supplies such as rice, maize, and vegetable oil, as well as non-food items like mattresses, blankets, hygiene kits, and clothing for all ages.

Laori urged traditional leaders to help spread awareness and educate their communities about flood preparedness to safeguard lives and property. She also called on Non-Governmental Organizations and philanthropists to support the government’s relief efforts to aid those affected by the floods.
