The Commissioner of Police for Akwa Ibom State, Waheed Ayilara has tragically passed away in the early hours of Thursday at the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital, Ikeja.

His death followed complications after undergoing prostate cancer surgery the previous day.

Waheed Ayilara, who was a former Deputy Commissioner of Police and was in charge of the State Criminal Investigation Department in Yaba, Lagos, had recently attended several social events in Lagos, including the wedding of his boss’s son and the retirement and birthday ceremony of a senior colleague. His sudden death shocked many, especially those who had seen him in high spirits during these gatherings.

Colleagues described Ayilara as jovial and full of life at the events, showing no signs of illness. They found it hard to believe that someone who had been laughing and joking with them just days earlier could pass away so suddenly. According to sources, Ayilara walked into the hospital for surgery on August 28, 2024, only to pass away the following morning due to complications from the procedure.

Ayilara was remembered as a kind, dedicated officer and a true leader who had a significant impact on those he mentored. His unexpected death left his colleagues and friends deeply saddened, struggling to come to terms with the loss of someone they respected and admired.
