The Federal Government has urged the National Association of Resident Doctors, NARD, to end their ongoing seven-day warning strike, emphasizing that the action could worsen the already delicate situation surrounding the kidnapping of Dr. Ganiyat Popoola, a doctor abducted in December 2023.

Dr. Tunji Alausa, the Minister of State for Health made this appeal during a visit to the National Eye Centre in Kaduna, where he reassured the public that significant efforts are being made to secure Dr. Popoola’s release. He confirmed that the government and security agencies are actively negotiating with the kidnappers and have been in constant communication with the National Security Adviser, Nuhu Ribadu.

Alausa expressed optimism, noting that recent information indicates Dr. Popoola is still alive, which he described as a positive sign in the ongoing rescue operations. He acknowledged the complexity of the situation, including the kidnappers’ frequently changing demands, but assured that all necessary steps are being taken to ensure her safe return.

The minister reiterated that the strike could worsen the situation and called on NARD to reconsider their position, urging them to focus on collective prayers and support for Dr. Popoola’s safe recovery. However, NARD representatives at the National Eye Centre confirmed that the strike continues, with support from medical and dental consultants, following a directive from their national leadership.
