In the early hours of Friday, gunmen launched an attack on the Ogbaru Local Government Area headquarters in Atani, Anambra State, causing widespread panic among residents. The reasons behind the assault remain unclear, but reports indicate that gunfire erupted within the local government premises, forcing people to stay indoors.

The Anambra State Police Command confirmed that the attack was successfully repelled by security operatives. The State Police Public Relations Officer, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, stated that the assailants were met with strong resistance, preventing further escalation.

“The gallantry of the security operatives resisted the gunmen. Although some local government properties were destroyed and some buildings were affected, no lives were lost. A joint security operation is currently ongoing,” Ikenga said in a statement. He added that further updates on the situation would be provided as more information becomes available.

Ogbaru, a riverine local government area bordering Onitsha South and Ekwusigo LGAs, has faced multiple gunmen attacks in recent years, raising concerns about security in the region.
