Yobe health workers suspend strike after agreement with government

The Joint Association of Medical and Health Workers Union in Yobe state has suspended the strike action embarked upon on Friday after reaching an agreement with Yobe state government.

The workers embarked on strike this morning to demand the implementation of hazard allowances of its members which was approved in 2019 but only few unions are currently enjoying it.

The Chairman of the Medical and Health Workers Union in the state, Satomi Hikama said the Deputy Governor, Idi Barde-Gubana after meeting with the leadership of the associations signed an agreement to effect payment of the allowances by September 2024.

“We embarked on strike action this morning to demand the implementation of our hazard allowances which the circular was issued during the Covid-19 outbreak to be implemented across the country.

“In Yobe, only few individuals are currently enjoying this allowances, among other demands. After meeting with the Deputy Governor, Idi Barde-Gubana, the strike action has now been suspended as the government pledged to implement the allowances by September ending 2024,” he said.

Meanwhile Governor Mai Mala Buni in a statement signed by his Deputy, Idi Barde Gubana asked the workers to resume work, assuring them that the hazard allowances would be paid by September 2024.

Unions that embarked on the strike action include, Association of Resident Doctors, Association of Medical Laboratory Scientists of Nigeria, National Association of Nigerian Nurses and Midwifery, Medical and Health Workers Union, Nigeria Society of Physiotherapists, Association of Radiographers of Nigeria, among others.
