In a remarkable gesture honoring his contributions to the Benin Kingdom, the Oba of Benin, Oba Ewuare II has presented a royal plaque to Afrobeats megastar Rema.
The singer, whose real name is Divine Ikubor, hails from Benin City and has been a proud ambassador for Edo State, promoting the city and the legacy of the ancient Benin Empire through his music.
The presentation took place on Thursday as Rema visited the Oba’s palace ahead of his highly anticipated homecoming concert at the Ogbe Stadium in Benin City.
Earlier this week, Rema joined Edo State Governor Godwin Obaseki for the groundbreaking ceremony of the Edo Arena, where the governor announced that the new 6,000-capacity arena would be named the Rema Dome in honor of the singer’s achievements.

In his latest hit song, “Benin Boys,” featuring fellow Edo-born artist Shallipopi, Rema expressed his pride in promoting the kingdom, saying, “Na we be the pride of Benin, Oba sef suppose give us medal.” The song serves as a tribute to Rema’s hometown, showcasing his commitment to celebrating the city and its heritage.
