Former Edo State Governor, Adams Oshiomhole has sparked outrage and criticisms after mocking Governor Godwin Obaseki and his wife, Betsy, over their childlessness.

During the PDP’s campaign flag-off at the Ubiaja Township Stadium in Esan South-East Local Government Area, Mrs Obaseki introduced Ighodalo’s wife, Ifeyinwa, to the crowd, emphasising the importance of having a woman in the Government House.

She said: “Let us vote for the best candidate in this coming election, and I want to introduce the wife. Incidentally, among all the candidates, only one has a wife, and it’s our own party’s candidate, Asue Ighodalo. Only he has a wife. This is the wife, Mrs. Ifeyinwa Ighodalo.

“Edo women, know that only one candidate has a wife. Better things come to women when there’s a woman in the Government House. All women in Edo, regardless of party, should see the candidate who has a wife. They will take us higher.”

In a video posted on the TVC’s X handle on Sunday, Oshiomhole, who represents Edo North in the 10th Assembly in reaction to Betsy’s comment said he was shocked that the wife of the candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, Mrs Asue Ighodalo could say the All Progressives Congress, APC candidate, Monday Okpebholo, in the election did not have a wife when in fact he had children, who have been properly trained.

Oshimhole who spoke on Saturday about the election that will be held on September 21, could be heard saying, “I was shocked yesterday to see Mrs. Obaseki, the first lady, saying that our candidate has no wife.

“She is the most…I’m sorry that she has to say that, because here is a woman who has no child. Between him and Obaseki, they have no child, they are childless.

“They are even not ready to adopt. I mean, I don’t blame anybody who should not have a child. But people who have love for children, they go to motherless homes and adopt children.

“They have not adopted, they are both in their 60s. So you married, I don’t know whether it’s a contract or whatever it is, but they have no child,” Oshimhole said.

He explained that the wife and children of the APC governorship candidate, Okpebholo, joined in the campaigns across the state, saying “now our candidate not only have children, he has invested in the education of those children, such that you watch them on live television, covered by your media stations, where the first one that spoke is a lawyer, the second one is a medical doctor, and they had dressed the crowd in a Edo South, in a Edo Central, in Edo North, and their mother was there,” he added.
