An Israeli court has ordered the immediate cessation of a nationwide general strike, which had paralyzed the country following the discovery of six hostages’ bodies in Gaza.

Initiated by the Histadrut labor union, the strike disrupted essential services and transportation but was ruled politically motivated by the court. This industrial action, triggered by public outrage over the government’s failure to secure the hostages’ release, reflects deep divisions in Israeli society over the handling of the ongoing Gaza conflict and the future of hostages still in captivity.

The strike was a reaction to the growing public frustration and sorrow after the Israeli military found the bodies of six hostages in Gaza on Sunday. These hostages, including an Israeli-American, were among those taken during the Hamas-led attack on October 7. The discovery of their bodies sparked widespread protests, with tens of thousands of Israelis taking to the streets to demand a cease-fire deal and the immediate release of the remaining hostages.

Despite the court’s ruling, the strike had already caused considerable impact, with many cities participating in the protest. However, some municipalities, particularly those aligned with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s right-wing government, chose not to join the strike. Government supporters criticized the protest, arguing it played into Hamas’s hands and encouraged the militant group to maintain a tough negotiating stance.

The Israeli government and Hamas have traded blame for the hostages’ deaths, with Israel claiming that Hamas executed the hostages just before Israeli forces reached them, while Hamas blamed Israeli and U.S. actions for the delay in negotiations.

The ongoing conflict has resulted in significant humanitarian and political challenges, with over 100 hostages still believed to be held in Gaza and a third of them presumed dead. The strike and subsequent protests reflect the deep divisions within Israeli society over how to handle the crisis, with some calling for negotiations to secure the hostages’ release and others supporting Netanyahu’s approach of continuous military pressure on Hamas.
