Toronto Police have arrested a Canadian-Nigerian woman, Amaka Sunnberger, in connection with an investigation into hate-motivated threats targeting members of the Nigerian community.

The 46-year-old, who resides in Toronto, was apprehended on September 1, 2024, following a report received on August 28, 2024, alleging that Sunnberger had made online threats against specific individuals within the Nigerian community on or around August 25, 2024.

Sunnberger has been charged with uttering threats and is set to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice on Monday, September 2, 2024. Her court appearance will take place at 2201 Finch Avenue West, where she will face a judge to answer the charges.

The Toronto Police Service, in a statement titled “Suspected Hate-Motivated Threatening Investigation, Woman Arrested,” confirmed the details of the arrest and provided insight into the ongoing investigation. The case is being handled as a suspected hate-motivated offense, with the Toronto Police Hate Crime Unit actively involved in the proceedings.

“Hate-motivated crimes may involve consultation with the Crown and if convicted, hate is considered an aggravating factor in sentencing,” the statement read.

Recall that in a viral TikTok clip, Sunnberger, a Canada-based woman, allegedly threatened to kill fellow Nigerians living in the North American country. “Record me, it’s time to start poisoning the meals of the Yorubas and Benin people, poison their food and drinks at work so they can begin to die one by one,” she said in the video.

Toronto Police are urging anyone with information related to this case to come forward. They can be reached at 416-808-3500, or tips can be submitted anonymously through Crime Stoppers at 416-222-TIPS (8477) or online at www.222tips.com.

This case underscores the seriousness with which law enforcement in Toronto treats hate-motivated offenses, highlighting the potential legal consequences that can follow such actions.
