Russian President Vladimir Putin has asserted that Ukraine’s recent incursion into the Russian region of Kursk has failed to achieve its strategic objectives, while also making a surprising endorsement in the upcoming U.S. presidential election.

Speaking at the Eastern Economic Forum in Vladivostok on Thursday, Putin labeled Ukraine’s cross-border operation as a futile attempt to divert Russian forces and halt their advance in eastern Ukraine.

According to Putin, Ukraine’s goal was to create anxiety and compel Russia to redeploy troops from critical battlefronts, particularly in the Donbas region, which is a key target for Russian forces. However, he claimed that this strategy did not succeed, stating, “The enemy’s goal was to make us nervous and stop our offensive in critical regions, particularly in Donbas. Did they succeed? No.”

Putin emphasized that by deploying substantial and well-trained units into Russian territory, Ukraine has weakened its own military strength along the broader front, allowing Russian troops to intensify their offensive actions. He noted that Russian forces have stabilized the situation and are gradually pushing Ukrainian soldiers out of the border areas.

The incursion, which began on August 6, marked the most significant foreign attack on Russian territory since World War II, involving thousands of Ukrainian troops supported by drones, heavy artillery, and Western-supplied weaponry. Despite this, Putin maintained that the operation has backfired, enabling Russian troops to advance more effectively in the Donbas region.

In addition to his comments on the conflict, Putin made an unexpected foray into U.S. politics by expressing support for Vice President Kamala Harris in the upcoming presidential election. He cited her “infectious” laugh as a positive trait, suggesting it indicates she is doing well. This endorsement came after Putin mentioned that his preferred candidate, President Joe Biden, had been removed from the race and had recommended his supporters back Harris.

Putin’s remarks on the U.S. election were laced with irony, given the historical tensions between Russia and the U.S. under former President Donald Trump, whom Putin has previously praised. However, Putin’s latest comments are likely to be viewed with skepticism by the White House and Harris’s campaign, especially in light of recent sanctions and criminal charges related to alleged Russian efforts to influence U.S. public sentiment.

The ongoing conflict between Russia and Ukraine continues to escalate, with both sides suffering significant losses. Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelensky has maintained that his country will hold onto the territory it has gained in the Kursk region until the conflict concludes, while Putin remains resolute in his pursuit of the Donbas region.

As the situation remains volatile, international attention is focused on the potential for further escalation and the impact of external factors, such as U.S. political developments, on the conflict’s trajectory.
