In a significant escalation of efforts to counter foreign election meddling, the United States has accused Russia of orchestrating a comprehensive campaign to interfere in the 2024 presidential election.

The Biden administration announced a series of measures, including criminal charges against Russian state media executives, sanctions against key figures, and the seizure of numerous internet domains linked to Russian disinformation efforts.

The Justice Department filed money-laundering charges against two employees of RT, Russia’s state-owned broadcaster, for allegedly using a Tennessee-based company to produce and disseminate content aimed at influencing the election.

Attorney General Merrick Garland outlined that these individuals used shell companies and fake personas to pay millions of dollars to the American company to create videos designed to amplify political divisions in the United States.

In addition to the charges, the Treasury Department imposed sanctions on several Russian entities and individuals, including RT’s Editor-in-Chief Margarita Simonyan and her deputies, as well as ANO Dialog, a Russian nonprofit tied to the disinformation campaign known as Doppelganger.

The State Department also designated five Kremlin-backed news organizations, including RT, Ruptly, and Sputnik, as foreign government entities, which will limit visa issuance for their employees.

The US government has seized 32 internet domains used in Russian government-directed foreign influence campaigns, aiming to reduce international support for Ukraine and influence voters in the United States.

These actions are part of a broader initiative to counter Russian efforts to manipulate the electoral process and exacerbate US political divisions.

US officials have warned that Russia favors former President Donald Trump over Vice President Kamala Harris in the upcoming election, viewing Trump as less supportive of US assistance to Ukraine.

The FBI is also investigating a small group of Americans suspected of intentionally spreading Kremlin narratives, although officials emphasized that they are not targeting free speech but rather those who knowingly propagate false information on behalf of the Kremlin.

However, Russia has denied the allegations, with officials calling the US actions an attempt to stifle dissenting voices and retaliate against US media.

The Kremlin has repeatedly stated that it has not meddled in the upcoming US election, despite previous US intelligence assessments indicating otherwise.
