At least three people lost their lives and several others were injured in a series of early-morning accidents along the Maryland axis of Lagos State on Sunday.
The tragic incidents, which involved multiple vehicles, were confirmed by Nosa Okunbor, Head of Public Affairs at the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency, LASEMA.
Okunbor explained that the first accident occurred when a diesel-laden tanker suffered a brake failure, veering out of control and crashing into several vehicles. This resulted in the deaths of three individuals, while an unspecified number of others sustained injuries.
LASEMA’s response team arrived at the scene around 1 a.m. to discover the aftermath of another accident involving a containerized truck that collided with a MACK truck. The driver of the container truck suffered a leg injury in the crash, which was reportedly caused by reckless driving and speeding.

“Upon arrival, our team encountered a multiple-vehicle accident involving an oil tanker that had lost control and rammed into several cars, leading to numerous casualties. In a separate accident, an articulated truck carrying a 40-foot container collided with a MACK truck loaded with industrial bottles,” Okunbor stated.
The vehicles involved included two Volkswagen Vanagon commercial buses, a Mitsubishi Space Bus, two mini-buses (Korope) and a Honda car. Emergency responders swiftly secured the area, temporarily closing the road and bridge to ensure safety and manage traffic.
Rescue efforts began immediately to clear the accident scene and restore normal traffic flow. Teams from LASEMA, the police, and the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service worked together to recover the vehicles and address the gridlock caused by the incident.
By the time emergency responders arrived, the bodies of the three fatalities had already been removed, while critically injured victims were transported to nearby hospitals for treatment.
