President Bola Tinubu has designated Vice President Kashim Shettima to lead Nigeria’s delegation to the 79th United Nations General Assembly, UNGA, in New York.
The decision follows President Tinubu’s return from a recent trip to China and the United Kingdom, as he focuses on addressing pressing domestic challenges, including the aftermath of severe flooding in Nigeria.
At UNGA 79, Vice President Shettima will deliver Nigeria’s national statement and participate in key sideline events, including bilateral meetings with global leaders. The high-level General Debate, under the theme “Leaving no one behind: Acting together for the advancement of peace, sustainable development, and human dignity for present and future generations,” will take place from September 24 to 28, 2024.

Femi Gbajabiamila, the President’s Chief of Staff, communicated Tinubu’s directive during a retreat organized by the State House management. However, the President’s alleged hospital visit has sparked controversy, with critics accusing him of being deceptive about the purpose of his trip. A video surfaced showing Tinubu leaving St. Mary’s Hospital, fueling speculation about his health. Critics, including activist Mahdi Shehu, claimed that Tinubu’s meeting with King Charles was used to obscure his hospital visit.
This development comes amidst growing concerns about President Tinubu’s policies, which some have labeled repressive and disconnected from the struggles of the masses. Furthermore, Tinubu’s frequent international travels have drawn criticism, with many expressing worry about the financial burden these trips impose on the country.
The 79th UNGA will be chaired by Ambassador Philémon Yang of Cameroon, who will lead the Assembly’s work until September 2025. Heads of State or Government are expected to participate, creating a unique opportunity to strengthen relations and dialogue between world leaders.
