Nigeria’s Super Eagles and Rwanda’s Amavubi played a goalless draw in the Africa Cup of Nations, AFCON, 2025 qualifier at the Amahoro Stadium in Kigali on Tuesday.

The match marked the sixth encounter between the two teams, with Nigeria maintaining an unbeaten record against Rwanda, having won twice and drawn four times in previous meetings.

Both teams created several scoring opportunities but were unable to convert, resulting in a tightly contested affair. Nigeria, coming off a strong start in their qualifying campaign with a 3-0 victory over Benin Republic, aimed to continue their winning streak under interim coach Augustine Eguavoen. However, Rwanda’s recent form and the advantage of playing at home posed a significant challenge for the Super Eagles.

Rwanda, who had drawn 1-1 with Libya in their previous match, drew strength from their home supporters and successfully fended off Nigeria’s attacks. The result leaves Rwanda in second place in Group D, with one point from two games, while Nigeria remains at the top of the group with four points from their two matches.

After the game, both coaches expressed respect for their opponents and the importance of the result. Nigeria’s coach, Eguavoen, reiterated his team’s commitment to winning, saying, “We play to win all the time because Nigerians expect their team to win all the time. We respect Rwanda, but we don’t get intimidated by any team.”

Rwanda’s coach, Torsten Spittler, acknowledged the benefit of playing at home and the confidence gained from the previous draw with Libya. “We know our next game against Nigeria won’t be easy, but we hope to make the best of our home advantage. The draw with Libya brings us more confidence,” Spittler said.

The outcome sets the stage for an intriguing group stage, with both teams striving to secure their spots in the 2025 AFCON. The draw also highlights the competitive nature of the qualifying rounds, where every point is crucial in the pursuit of continental success.
