A Federal High Court in Abuja has granted bail to 10 members of the #EndBadGovernance movement, who are facing charges of attempting to overthrow President Bola Tinubu.

The alleged treasonous acts were said to have taken place during the nationwide protest between August 1 and 10, where the defendants  were accused of levying war against the country.

Justice Emeka Nwite, who presided over the bail applications, ruled that each defendant must meet a N10 million bail requirement. To secure their release, they are required to provide sureties who own property in Abuja, with the sureties submitting property documents to the court alongside an affidavit of means.

Additionally, each defendant must also provide another surety based in Abuja who will surrender their international passport and provide three passport photographs. The Inspector General of Police opposed the bail application, but Justice Nwite overruled the objections, granting bail while placing restrictions on the defendants, prohibiting them from participating in public rallies during the trial.

Until the bail conditions are fully met, the defendants are to remain in custody. The court has scheduled September 27 for the start of the trial, where the protesters will face treason charges for their role in the protest.

The protesters, identified as Michael Adaramoye aka Lenin, Adeyemi Abayomi, Suleiman Yakubu, Opaluwa Simon, Angel Innocent, Buhari Lawal, Mosiu Sadiq, Bashir Bello, Nuradeen Khakis and Abdusalam Zubairu, were arraigned under a charge marked FHC/ABJ/CR/454/2024, filed by the Inspector-General of Police on August 30.

The charges against them include treason, conspiracy to commit felony, inciting mutiny, and intent to destabilize Nigeria, all punishable under Section 97 of the Penal Code. The charges stem from their involvement in nationwide protests against economic hardship that took place between August 1 and August 10, 2024. These protests reportedly turned violent in some areas, leading to looting and vandalism.
