Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta has extended his stay at the club by signing a new three-year contract, keeping him at the helm until 2027.
The 42-year-old, who took over as manager in December 2019, has led Arsenal to back-to-back second-place finishes in the Premier League but had entered the final year of his previous deal.
Sky Sports News initially reported that Arteta was set to extend his contract last month. The confirmation comes just ahead of Arsenal’s highly anticipated derby against Tottenham, set for Super Sunday and broadcast live on Sky Sports.
Under Arteta’s leadership, Arsenal won the FA Cup in 2020 and claimed two Community Shields, in 2020 and 2023. Despite a rocky start with two eighth-place league finishes, Arsenal’s fortunes have steadily improved. They finished fifth in 2022, qualifying for the Europa League, and returned to the Champions League after a six-year absence by finishing second to Manchester City in successive seasons.
The 2023/24 campaign saw Arsenal achieve their highest Premier League win total with 28 victories and finish with 89 points, just two shy of City. Since Arteta’s arrival, the Gunners have added 33 points to their tally, reflecting consistent progress. One of the most notable improvements has been in goal difference: last season, Arsenal boasted a +62 margin, with 91 goals scored and only 29 conceded, a major leap from the +8 recorded in Arteta’s first season.
Speaking about his new contract, Arteta said: “I feel extremely proud, very excited and am looking forward to what is coming next. I’m proud to be where I am and have the relationships that I have with everyone at the club.
“I feel extremely lucky to work every single day with good people and the ambition we have here. I feel very inspired, I feel challenged, I feel supported and I want to do much more than what we’ve already done together.
“Together with the players and everyone at the club, we are looking forward to the coming years, with our supporters, who have emotionally transformed the club and the team.”
Arteta’s contract extension cements his role in guiding Arsenal’s continued development as they aim for further success in the coming seasons.
