A leaked memo shared by Omoyele Sowore from the Department of State Services, DSS, has ordered the immediate arrest of activist and former presidential candidate, upon his return to Nigeria.

Sowore, who ran for president in both the 2019 and 2023 general elections, shared the document on Thursday, highlighting the government’s intensified surveillance efforts against him.

The memo, signed by DSS official Adeola D. Ali under the directive of newly appointed Director General, Adeola Ajayi, cited Sowore’s role in the recent #EndBadGovernance protests as the reason for his detainment.

The protests, which demanded systemic reforms and an end to poor governance, faced heavy resistance from security agencies.

Marked “DSE: 94/6203 X WATCHLIST ACTION,” the memo read: “The DGSS has approved the upgrading of WLA ‘B’ (Report arrival and destination by telephone immediately) to WLA ‘F’ (Detain traveler and escort with baggage to NHSS) against Omoyele Sowore, an activist/founder of Sahara Reporters Inc., an online news agency.”

Reacting to the memo, Sowore took to social media, stating: “Meanwhile, the lawless @OfficialDSSNG has upgraded my status and name on their “watchlist” for arrest upon arrival in Nigeria.

It is imperative to recognize that our country Nigeria requires salvation and our people need liberation, which will necessitate considerable effort. I intend to return home shortly, I mean VERY SOON.”

Despite the DSS’s actions, Sowore reaffirmed his commitment to leading fresh #EndBadGovernance protests scheduled for October 1, 2024, insisting that no threats would deter the movement.
