The Nigerian Falconets’ journey in the FIFA U20 Women’s World Cup in Colombia has come to an end after a 2-1 defeat to Japan.
The team, led by coach Danjuma, fell behind early when Japan’s Miyu Matsunaga scored in the 33rd minute, converting a pass from Rihona Ujihara.
Despite attempts to regain control, the Falconets allowed Japan to dominate, and Maya Hijjikati doubled the lead in the 63rd minute. Nigeria responded late in the game, with Olushola Sobowale netting a consolation goal from a Goodness Osigwe cross, but it wasn’t enough to turn the tide.
Japan’s Maya Hijikata continued her stellar form at the FIFA U20 Women’s World Cup, netting her fifth goal of the tournament in the 2-1 victory over Nigeria. The 20-year-old striker, who has scored in every group stage match, sealed Japan’s win with the crucial 66th-minute goal, connecting with a precise cross from Chinari Sasai. This marked Hijikata’s fifth goal in four matches.
On the other hand, Nigeria’s Chiamaka Okwuchukwu, one of the Falconets’ standout players throughout the tournament, struggled against Japan’s tight defense. Despite her speed and physical presence, Okwuchukwu was effectively neutralized by Japan’s backline, limiting her impact on the match.

The Falconets attempted numerous crosses, particularly from the right flank, in a bid to break through Japan’s defense. Jumoke Alani, more involved after a tactical shift in the second half, delivered several of these crosses, but Japan’s defenders were able to handle the aerial threats effectively.
Nigeria coach Christopher Danjuma made his first substitution in the 75th minute, bringing on Goodness Osigwe for Amina Bello. Osigwe later provided the assist for Olushola Sobowale’s late consolation goal, but by then, Japan had already secured a comfortable two-goal lead.
The game, played in Bogota, was briefly affected by a heavy downpour in the second half, but both teams continued to push forward despite the weather. Japan’s victory sends them into the quarterfinals, while Nigeria’s Falconets face another early exit.
The defeat marks another disappointing exit for the Falconets, who have struggled to progress beyond this stage since their runner-up finish in 2014, when they lost to Germany in the finals.
