The Federal Government has declared Monday, September 16, 2024, as a public holiday to mark the celebration of the Eid-ul-Maulud.

Eid-ul-Maulud is the commemoration of the birth of the Holy Prophet Muhammad.

The Minister of Interior, Dr. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, made the declaration on behalf of the Federal Government in a statement by the ministry’s Permanent Secretary, Dr Magdalene Ajani, on Friday.

While congratulating the Muslim Ummah on the occasion, he implored them to use the opportunity of the period to pray for enduring peace and a more prosperous egalitarian nation.

The minister urged the Muslims and all Nigerians to imbibe the spirit of patience, sacrifice, and resilience.

Eid-ul-Maulud is one of the most important religious events for Muslims and is typically observed with prayers, special sermons, and community gatherings.

The day is also seen as an opportunity to engage in acts of charity and strengthen bonds within communities.

Eid-ul-Maulud is an annual festival commemorating the birthday of Muhammad on the traditional date of 12 Rabi’ al-Awwal, the third month of the Islamic calendar.

Celebrants hold mahfils on Maulud in which religious poetry is recited in praise of Muhammad accompanied by a feast.

Other customs affiliated with Maulud are supererogatory fasting, Islamic music and dhikr. Most denominations of Islam approve of the commemoration of Muhammad’s birthday.

Nigerians from all walks of life have been encouraged to participate in the holiday with a sense of national unity and peace.

With the Federal Government’s announcement, public institutions are expected to be closed on Monday in observance of the holiday, resuming regular activities on Tuesday.
