President Joe Biden and British Prime Minister Keir Starmer Friday at the White House discussed Ukraine’s urgent request to lift restrictions on the use of long-range weapons against Russian targets.

This dialogue comes as Ukraine intensifies its push for Western allies to permit deeper strikes within Russian territory, a strategy that has sparked concerns about escalating tensions with Moscow.

During their discussions, both leaders acknowledged the critical nature of the situation in Ukraine, with Starmer emphasizing that the coming weeks could be decisive for the war effort. “It is vital that we support Ukraine in this fight for freedom,” he stated, highlighting the urgency of Ukraine’s need for enhanced military capabilities.

Despite the pressing circumstances, the meeting did not yield any immediate policy changes regarding the deployment of long-range missiles, particularly the British Storm Shadow missiles, which require U.S. approval due to their American-made components.

White House officials indicated that current restrictions would remain in place, reflecting ongoing apprehensions about provoking a broader conflict with Russia.

Russian President Vladimir Putin has warned that allowing Ukraine to utilize long-range missiles would signify direct NATO involvement in the war, a claim Biden dismissed, asserting, “I don’t think much about Vladimir Putin.” Nevertheless, the U.S. administration remains cautious, with officials reiterating that while support for Ukraine is unwavering, the introduction of long-range strike capabilities is a complex issue that requires careful consideration.

As the situation evolves, both Biden and Starmer are expected to continue their discussions at the upcoming United Nations General Assembly, where they will engage with other international leaders on the broader implications of the conflict in Ukraine and its connection to global security challenges.
