A fatal accident on the Third Mainland Bridge near the Ilaje area of Lagos on Monday left one person dead and eight others injured.

The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority, LASTMA, confirmed the incident, involving two Mazda commercial buses (LND 624 YE and EKY 804 YH) reportedly in a high-speed chase from Adeniji Adele.

LASTMA’s Public Affairs Director, Adebayo Taofiq, disclosed that the swift intervention by officials led to the rescue of eight passengers, all suffering from severe fractures. The injured were rushed to Gbagada General Hospital for emergency treatment, with assistance from the Lagos State Ambulance Services.

In a separate incident the same day, a Honda CRV (AKD 743 HV) overturned on the bridge near the University of Lagos waterfront. Fortunately, no casualties were reported, and LASTMA quickly cleared the wreckage to maintain traffic flow.

The agency expressed condolences to the bereaved family and extended wishes for the injured to recover swiftly.

Lagos State Traffic Management Authority is a Lagos State-owned agency under the Ministry of Transportation. The agency was established on the 15th of July, 2000 to transform the state transportation system to ensure free flow of traffic in the state and also reduce road accidents. The current head of the agency is Mr. Bolaji Oreagba who before his appointment was the Director of Operations in LASTMA.
