Manchester City midfielder Rodri has suggested that top soccer players are nearing a point where they may consider going on strike due to the increasing number of matches they are required to play.
In an interview, Rodri stated, “I believe we are approaching that. It’s quite straightforward; if you ask any player, they would share the same sentiment. If things continue in this manner, we may reach a point where we have no alternative, but we will see.”
Rodri highlighted the new Champions League format, which will introduce at least two additional matches before the knockout rounds, as well as the expanded 32-team Club World Cup scheduled for next summer, as contributing factors to the players’ workload.

Over the last two complete seasons, Manchester City has competed in 120 matches across various tournaments. The grueling schedule has raised concerns about player burnout and the potential for injuries.
Rodri’s comments come at a time when the football calendar is becoming increasingly congested, with national team commitments, domestic league matches, and various cup competitions all vying for players’ time and energy.
As the debate surrounding player welfare and the sustainability of the current fixture schedule continues, Rodri’s warning serves as a stark reminder of the need for governing bodies and club owners to prioritize the well-being of the athletes who are the lifeblood of the sport.
