The Polaris Dawn mission has successfully concluded, marking a significant milestone in commercial space exploration. The SpaceX Crew Dragon capsule splashed down in the Gulf of Mexico early Sunday morning, September 15, 2024, after a groundbreaking five-day journey that included the first-ever commercial spacewalk.
The capsule, carrying billionaire entrepreneur Jared Isaacman and three other crew members SpaceX engineers Sarah Gillis and Anna Menon, along with retired U.S. Air Force pilot Scott “Kidd” Poteet landed at 3:37 AM EDT near the Dry Tortugas, approximately 70 miles off the coast of Florida. This mission not only set a record for the highest altitude reached by humans since the Apollo program but also showcased the capabilities of non-professional astronauts in performing complex space operations.
During their mission, the crew reached an unprecedented altitude of 1,400 kilometers (870 miles), surpassing the International Space Station’s orbit by more than three times. This achievement is a testament to the advancements in private space travel and paves the way for future missions under the Polaris Program, which aims to explore further into space.

A highlight of the mission was the historic spacewalk conducted by Isaacman and Gillis on September 12, where they spent about 12 minutes outside the capsule testing new extravehicular activity suits designed for future long-duration missions. Isaacman remarked during the spacewalk, “Back at home we all have a lot of work to do, but from here it looks like a perfect world,” as he took in breathtaking views of Earth from above.
Throughout their time in orbit, the crew conducted nearly 40 scientific experiments focused on understanding the effects of microgravity and space radiation on human health. They also tested new communication technologies using SpaceX’s Starlink satellites, demonstrating significant advancements in space communication systems.
As they returned to Earth, recovery teams were on standby to assist with their safe extraction from the capsule. Following brief medical evaluations, all crew members emerged healthy and elated after their historic journey. The success of Polaris Dawn signals a new era in commercial spaceflight and sets the stage for future explorations beyond low Earth orbit.
