The Federal Government has issued a warning to private companies to comply with the newly established minimum wage law of ₦70,000.

Alhaji Ismaila Abubakar, the Permanent Secretary of the Federal Ministry of Labour and Employment, emphasized this during the 13th Annual General Meeting of the Employers Association for Private Employment Agencies of Nigeria in Ikeja, Lagos.

He stressed the need for companies to respect the wage law to ensure fair labor practices and improve the living standards of workers in Nigeria. He also emphasized that private employment agencies must ensure that all contracts mandate a minimum wage of ₦70,000, with workers receiving this amount after deductions. This move is part of the government’s broader effort to enforce labor laws and enhance employee welfare across the country.

Credible News recalls that President Bola Tinubu signed the minimum wage bill into law on July 29, ending months of deliberations between government authorities, labour unions, and the private sector.

He signed it at the State House in Abuja days after the National Assembly had passed the bill.

The Senate and the House of Representatives swiftly passed the National Minimum Wage Act 2019 (Amendment Bill).

The bill, which underwent second and third readings in both legislative chambers of the National Assembly within minutes of being transmitted by the President, was approved separately by the Senate and the House of Representatives.

Following a unanimous vote after a clause-by-clause consideration by the Committee of the Whole, the National Minimum Wage Bill passed its third reading and was approved by the Senate. The House of Representatives passed the bill immediately, mirroring the Senate’s actions.

Senate President Godswill Akpabio had also announced that the new minimum wage applies to all workers across both public and private sectors, including maids and other domestic staff.

This measure underscores the Federal Government’s commitment to safeguarding worker welfare and ensuring fair labor practices across Nigeria.
