Harrods, the iconic London department store, has expressed its profound shock and condemnation following serious allegations of sexual abuse, including rape, against its former owner, the late Mohamed Al Fayed.
A new BBC documentary titled “Al-Fayed: Predator at Harrods” has unraveled that over 20 former female employees have accused Al Fayed of sexual misconduct during his tenure from 1985 to 2010. Among these allegations, five women have specifically accused him of rape.
The documentary details harrowing accounts from women who worked at Harrods, indicating that Al Fayed used his position of power to manipulate and assault them.
Reports suggest that the assaults occurred in various locations, including Al Fayed’s luxurious London apartment, the Ritz hotel in Paris, and during trips abroad.
One former employee recounted a traumatic experience, stating, “I made it obvious that I didn’t want that to happen. I did not give consent. I just wanted it to be over.”

Another victim described her fear while working under him, saying, “If he said ‘jump,’ employees would ask, ‘How high?'”
In response to these alarming allegations, Harrods’ current management issued a statement expressing their horror at the revelations. They acknowledged the company’s failure to protect its employees during Al Fayed’s ownership and extended a sincere apology to the victims.
“We are utterly appalled by the allegations of abuse perpetrated by Mohamed Al Fayed,” the statement read. “These actions were those of an individual intent on abusing his power wherever he operated.”
The allegations against Al Fayed come as part of a broader investigation into workplace safety and accountability at Harrods. The current owners have committed to ensuring such behavior is never repeated and have prioritized settling claims from victims swiftly to avoid lengthy legal battles.
The documentary is set to air on BBC Two and is already available on BBC iPlayer, shedding light on a dark chapter in the history of one of London’s most prestigious retail establishments.
