The Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, has secured all 260 ward councillorship seats in the 17 Local Government Areas of Enugu State following the local council elections held on Saturday.

Prof. Christian Ngwu, Chairman of the Enugu State Independent Electoral Commission, ENSIEC, announced the results on Monday, explaining that the delay in the announcement was due to a thorough review of the election data.

Ngwu, who served as the returning officer for the polls, confirmed that the PDP also won all 17 chairmanship positions in the state, previously declared on Sunday. He described the election process as peaceful, fair, free, and credible, with a level playing field for all 17 political parties that participated.

He added that ENSIEC would soon issue Certificates of Return to the elected officials. Full details of the councillorship election results will be made public shortly.

Governor Peter Mbah of Enugu State praised the peaceful conduct of the local government elections held across the state on Saturday, describing it as “democracy in action.” After casting his vote at Polling Unit 007 in Nkanu East Local Government Area, Mbah highlighted the calm and orderly nature of the exercise, calling it the most peaceful local election in the state’s history.

The governor reiterated his administration’s commitment to local government autonomy, emphasizing its critical role in bringing governance closer to the grassroots. He also pledged to collaborate with the newly elected officials, regardless of party affiliations, to ensure that their programs uplift the people and reduce poverty.

Commenting on voter turnout, Mbah noted that the turnout reflected the public’s belief in the government’s ability to improve their lives. However, reports from various polling units indicated a significant delay in the arrival of electoral materials, and voter turnout was generally low, with some units seeing as few as five to 10 voters. Despite these challenges, Mbah underscored the importance of ensuring democratic processes continue to function effectively.
