Tragedy struck in Kano State on Tuesday as five police officers lost their lives in a fatal auto crash, with 11 others sustaining various degrees of injuries along Kano-Zaria road, according to local authorities.
The Spokesman of the Command, SP Abdullahi Kiyawa, who confirmed the incident said 11 other police officers sustained injuries in the crash. He said the accident occurred at Karfi village in Kura LGA while the officers were returning to Kano from an official assignment.
“The accident occurred at Karfi, some few kilometers to Kano and five of the officers died as a result of the accident while 11 others sustained injuries.
“It was gathered that the vehicle in which the police officers were traveling had a head on collision with a trailer in the village.
“Five officers died on the spot while 11 others, who sustained various injuries, were rushed to Murtala Mohammed Specialist Hospital where they are currently receiving medical attention.”

The accident occurred on the Kano-Zaria highway when a police patrol vehicle, reportedly part of a convoy, was involved in a head-on collision with a truck. Eyewitnesses at the scene indicated that the patrol vehicle had been traveling at high speed when the crash happened, causing such a huge casualty.
Credible News recalls that in July, a road crash occurred at the Dangwaro Flyover along the same Kano-Zaria highway that claimed the lives of 25 persons, leaving 53 others injured.
The Federal Road Safety Corps of Kano Sector Command, confirmed the tragic incident, noting that a speeding trailer with 90 people onboard reportedly lost control and crashed, resulting in significant casualties and injuries. Twelve people onboard the trailer, with the registration number KMC 311 ZB, were unhurt in the crash.
“Preliminary investigations suggest that the probable cause of the crash was due to overspeeding and loss of control by the driver of the trailer, said FRSC Sector Commander in Kano, Ibrahim Abdullahi.
After the crash, the FRSC promptly initiated rescue operations with the support of the Nigeria Police Force and other emergency agencies.
