India has reported its first confirmed case of the mpox virus, specifically the clade 1b variant, which the World Health Organization ,WHO, has classified as an emergency strain.

This case marks not only India’s inaugural instance of this new variant but also the first recorded case in South Asia during the current outbreak. The patient, a 38-year-old man from Malappuram district in Kerala, had recently returned from the United Arab Emirates and tested positive for the virus last week.

The Union Health Ministry confirmed the diagnosis on September 23, 2024. According to health officials, the patient is currently stable and receiving treatment at a government medical college hospital in Manjeri, Kerala. Contact tracing efforts are underway, with approximately 29 friends and family members, as well as 37 fellow passengers from his flight, being monitored for potential symptoms. So far, none have displayed any signs of infection.

The WHO declared mpox a public health emergency in August 2024 due to a surge in cases linked to clade 1b. This variant has been associated with outbreaks primarily in Africa and has now spread to several countries outside the continent, including Sweden and Thailand. The clade 1b strain is noted for its higher transmissibility compared to earlier strains, raising concerns among health authorities worldwide.

Mpox, formerly known as monkeypox, is a viral illness that can cause painful skin lesions and flu-like symptoms such as fever and swollen lymph nodes. It spreads through close contact with infected individuals or animals and can be transmitted through sexual activity. The current outbreak has predominantly affected young males aged between 18 and 44 years.

Health officials in India have emphasized that while vigilance is necessary, there is no immediate cause for alarm regarding mass transmission. They noted that mpox generally spreads through close contact and body fluids, which suggests a lower risk of widespread outbreaks compared to diseases like COVID-19. The Health Ministry has urged states to remain alert and prepared for potential cases by enhancing surveillance and testing capabilities.

In response to this emerging threat, Kerala’s health minister has called on the public to report any symptoms promptly, especially those returning from abroad. Hospitals across the state are being equipped with isolation facilities for affected individuals.

As the situation develops, health experts continue to monitor global trends related to mpox. The WHO’s recent assessments indicate that while clade 1b cases are rising in certain regions of Africa, the overall risk of widespread transmission remains moderate outside these areas.

With this first confirmed case in India, authorities are reinforcing their commitment to public health safety by ensuring that appropriate measures are in place to manage and contain any potential outbreaks effectively.
