Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian accused Israel of deliberately laying “traps” to draw Iran into a broader conflict in the Middle East. Speaking to journalists on Monday at the United Nations in New York, Pezeshkian expressed deep concerns over Israel’s military actions, which he claims are aimed at provoking a wider war that could have catastrophic consequences for the region.
Pezeshkian’s comments come in the wake of a series of deadly Israeli airstrikes on Hezbollah positions in Lebanon, which resulted in significant civilian casualties, including at least 492 deaths, among them 35 children. This marked one of the deadliest days in Lebanon in decades, prompting widespread panic and displacement as tens of thousands fled their homes. In response to these attacks, Hezbollah has retaliated by launching rockets into northern Israel, further intensifying the cycle of violence.
During his address, Pezeshkian criticized Israel’s narrative that it does not seek a larger conflict. “While Israel claims it does not want a larger war, its actions speak differently,” he stated. He pointed to recent incidents such as the explosions of communication devices in Lebanon and the assassination of Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh in Tehran as evidence of Israel’s aggressive posture. “They are dragging us to a point where we do not wish to go,” he warned, emphasizing that “there is no winner in warfare.”

Pezeshkian articulated Iran’s desire for peace and stability, asserting that the country does not wish to escalate the ongoing hostilities between Israel and Hezbollah. He expressed frustration with Western nations that have urged Iran to exercise restraint while remaining silent about what he termed “Israel’s genocide” in Gaza. “We want to live in peace; we don’t want war,” he reiterated.
The Iranian president also touched on Iran’s military capabilities, hinting at potential retaliatory measures without specifying details. He stated that Iran has demonstrated its deterrent capabilities through past missile and drone strikes against Israeli targets, particularly following an Israeli attack on an Iranian consulate in Syria earlier this year.
As tensions continue to mount, Pezeshkian’s remarks underscore the precarious situation in the Middle East, where any miscalculation could lead to a broader conflict involving multiple regional powers. The international community watches closely as calls for de-escalation grow louder amid fears of an all-out war that could engulf the region.
Pezeshkian concluded his statements by reiterating that Iran is prepared to re-engage in negotiations regarding its nuclear program but emphasized that weapons of mass destruction have no place in Iran’s military strategy. His comments reflect a complex balancing act as Iran navigates its foreign policy amidst ongoing hostilities and regional instability.
