The deployment was confirmed on Tuesday, with Starmer emphasizing the urgency of the situation during a press briefing while en route to the United Nations General Assembly in New York. He stated, “Events in the past hours and days have demonstrated how volatile this situation is, which is why our message is clear: British nationals should leave now.”
The Prime Minister’s call to action follows a series of intense Israeli airstrikes targeting Hezbollah positions in southern Lebanon, which have reportedly resulted in significant civilian casualties, including nearly 570 deaths and over 1,800 injuries since Monday.
The UK government has activated emergency contingency plans to facilitate the safe evacuation of its citizens. This includes not only the troop deployment but also the readiness of Royal Air Force aircraft and helicopters stationed at RAF Akrotiri in Cyprus. Additionally, two Royal Navy ships, HMS Duncan and RFA Mounts Bay, are positioned off the coast of southern Cyprus to assist in potential evacuation operations.

Defense Secretary John Healey echoed Starmer’s sentiments, stating that the government is prepared for further deterioration of the situation. He highlighted that commercial flight options are rapidly diminishing as airlines suspend services to Lebanon amid rising violence. “We continue to urge all sides to step back from conflict to prevent further tragic loss of life,” Healey remarked.
The ongoing conflict has raised fears of a broader regional war, especially as Hezbollah has intensified its rocket attacks into Israel in solidarity with Hamas, which is engaged in its own conflict with Israeli forces in Gaza. The situation has left thousands of Lebanese civilians displaced, seeking refuge in schools and makeshift shelters as hostilities continue.
As global leaders gather for discussions at the UN General Assembly, Starmer plans to advocate for de-escalation and a ceasefire. He expressed deep concern about the potential for further escalation, stating, “I’m obviously going to New York to talk to colleagues and allies… but my message will be very much ceasefire. Pull back from the brink.”
The UK’s rapid response underscores its commitment to safeguarding its citizens abroad while navigating an increasingly complex geopolitical landscape. As tensions mount in Lebanon and beyond, the international community watches closely, hoping for a resolution that prevents further humanitarian crises in the region.
