New York City Mayor Eric Adams faces a stunning legal battle as he was indicted on five federal charges, including bribery, wire fraud, conspiracy, and soliciting illegal campaign contributions from foreign nationals.

The charges, which trace back to his time as Brooklyn Borough President in 2014, mark a dramatic fall for the city’s top official.

The indictment outlines Adams’ alleged decade-long scheme, during which he is accused of accepting improper benefits, such as luxury international trips, from wealthy foreign businesspeople, including a Turkish official. Prosecutors say Adams sought illegal “nominee” or “straw” contributions from foreign nationals, undermining federal laws meant to prevent foreign influence in U.S. elections.

In 2018, as he began his mayoral campaign, Adams allegedly solicited illegal donations, bypassing city laws banning corporate contributions by funneling money through employees. This led to a federal investigation, resulting in Thursday’s indictment.

U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of New York, Damian Williams, is set to hold a press conference to discuss the indictment. Federal investigators also executed a search warrant at Adams’ official residence, Gracie Mansion, on Thursday morning, spending over three hours on-site.

Adams, who has denied the charges, vowed to fight back, stating, “if I am charged, I am innocent and I will fight this with every ounce of my strength and spirit.” He added that these accusations are part of a campaign to “bring him down.”

While the mayor is not expected to appear in court immediately, sources suggest he will have several days to turn himself in. Meanwhile, his legal team, led by attorney Alex Spiro, has criticized the search as “a spectacle” and asserted that Adams had been willing to cooperate fully.

This indictment follows months of scrutiny regarding Adams’ connections to Turkish officials and campaign donations. His troubles escalated last year when federal investigators targeted his chief fundraiser and senior staff, leading to multiple raids and searches. Most recently, the FBI seized Adams’ phones in connection with the investigation.

Despite mounting legal pressure and calls for his resignation from prominent figures like Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, Adams has refused to step down. He stated defiantly, “I’m stepping up, not stepping down.” However, with the charges casting a shadow over his administration, the future of his political career is uncertain.

The federal investigation into Adams marks a major development in New York City politics, potentially upending his time as mayor and raising questions about foreign influence in U.S. elections. If convicted, Adams could face severe legal consequences, and his political career may be irreparably damaged.

In the event of his resignation, Public Advocate Jumaane Williams would take over as acting mayor until a special election is held.
