SpaceX has successfully launched a rescue mission to retrieve two astronauts stranded aboard the International Space Station, ISS, since June. The Falcon 9 rocket lifted off from Cape Canaveral, Florida, on Saturday afternoon, carrying NASA astronaut Nick Hague and Russian cosmonaut Alexander Gorbunov to the ISS. Their mission, dubbed Crew-9, is set to bring back astronauts Barry “Butch” Wilmore and Sunita “Suni” Williams, who have been unable to return to Earth due to complications with their original spacecraft.
Originally intended for an eight-day mission, Wilmore and Williams found themselves marooned in space after their Boeing Starliner spacecraft encountered significant technical issues during its inaugural crewed flight. Problems with the Starliner’s propulsion system forced NASA to delay their return indefinitely, ultimately leading to the decision to switch their rescue operation to SpaceX’s Dragon capsule.
NASA Administrator Bill Nelson expressed his excitement over the launch, stating, “Congrats to NASA and SpaceX on a successful launch. We live in an exciting period of exploration and innovation in the stars.” The Crew-9 mission aims not only to bring Wilmore and Williams home but also to conduct over 200 scientific experiments during their extended stay at the ISS.
The Dragon capsule is scheduled to dock with the ISS on Sunday evening, allowing for a seamless transfer of responsibilities between the incoming and outgoing crews. Wilmore and Williams are expected to remain aboard the ISS until February 2025, marking nearly eight months in orbit far exceeding their original timeline.

The decision to utilize SpaceX’s Dragon spacecraft came after extensive evaluations of the Starliner’s reliability. Following a series of malfunctions including thruster failures and helium leaks NASA deemed it too risky for Wilmore and Williams to return via the Starliner. Instead, they opted for a more reliable solution through SpaceX, which has been regularly transporting astronauts since its first crewed flight in 2020.
As preparations for the mission unfolded, both Hague and Gorbunov expressed confidence in their roles. Hague remarked on the dynamic nature of spaceflight, acknowledging that “there’s always something that is changing.” He emphasized the professionalism required in such high-stakes environments.
The launch was initially set for Thursday but faced delays due to Hurricane Helene’s impact on Florida. As weather conditions improved, SpaceX proceeded with the launch, marking another successful chapter in its partnership with NASA.
