In a remarkable and rare medical occurrence, a woman in northwestern China, identified by her last name Li, gave birth to twins last month — one baby from each of her two uteruses.
The extraordinary case took place at Xi’an People’s Hospital in Shaanxi province, where doctors described the event as a “one in a million” phenomenon. Li welcomed a healthy baby boy and girl via caesarean section, captivating the country with her incredible story.
Li was born with a rare condition called uterine didelphys, which affects about 1 in 2,000 women. This condition results in the presence of two separate uteruses and two cervixes. Despite its rarity, Li’s twins were conceived naturally and carried to full term, an even more unusual outcome.

Her story has sparked awe and admiration across Chinese social media platforms, where it has garnered over 50 million views. Messages of congratulations and support flooded in, with one user calling it a “miracle” and another expressing admiration for her strength.
Li’s journey to motherhood was not without challenges, as she had experienced a miscarriage during a previous pregnancy. However, in January, she became pregnant again, and an early ultrasound revealed she was expecting twins, one in each uterus. After months of careful medical supervision, Li gave birth to a boy weighing 7 pounds, 19 ounces, and a girl at 5 pounds, 5 ounces.
This rare and successful delivery has left many in awe of both the mother’s resilience and the medical team’s expertise.
