President Bola Tinubu has issued a firm ultimatum to terrorists and insurgents: surrender or face a renewed military offensive.
This warning came during the opening of the News Agency of Nigeria, Inaugural Annual International Lecture, held in Abuja on October 3, 2024. The President emphasized his administration’s commitment to restoring peace and security across Nigeria, especially in regions plagued by insurgent activities.
Represented by National Security Adviser Malam Nuhu Ribadu, Tinubu’s message came at a critical time as Nigeria continues to face persistent threats from insurgent groups, particularly in the northeastern part of the country. The lecture, themed “Insecurity in the Sahel (2008-2024): Dissecting Nigeria’s Challenges – Genesis, Impacts, and Options,” aimed to explore the complex dynamics of insecurity affecting Nigeria and neighboring countries.

In his address, Tinubu underscored the government’s resolve to intensify military operations against terrorist factions that have long destabilized the region. He stated, “We are prepared to take decisive action against those who choose violence over dialogue. The time for negotiation is running out; we urge those involved in these heinous acts to lay down their arms and embrace peace.”
This strong warning aligns with recent military successes in the fight against insurgency. The ongoing Operation LAKE SANITY 2 has delivered significant blows to Boko Haram militants, with reports indicating that over 140 insurgents have been killed and 57 captured in recent weeks. Additionally, 176 insurgents have surrendered to authorities, signaling a possible shift among some factions toward seeking amnesty rather than continuing their violent campaigns.
Under growing pressure to address security challenges more effectively, Tinubu’s administration has taken a multi-faceted approach to tackling insurgency. His call for surrender is not only a tactical move but also a strategic appeal to insurgents to reconsider their choices amid mounting military pressure.
The Nigerian military’s operations are part of a larger strategy that includes collaboration with international partners to stabilize the broader Sahel region. The Multinational Joint Task Force has played a crucial role in these efforts, launching operations that have significantly disrupted terrorist activities across borders.
As tensions remain high, President Tinubu’s ultimatum serves as both a warning and an opportunity for dialogue. The coming weeks will be critical in determining whether insurgents heed the call for peace or if the military will escalate its operations. The Nigerian government remains resolute in its mission to restore peace and protect its citizens as it continues to confront one of its most pressing challenges.
